Finance jobs in Oxford

Good financial management lies at the heart of every successful organisation which means that experienced finance professionals and financial support staff are in high demand.

Finance jobs in Oxford

Every employer, whether a small business, large corporate or not-for-profit organisation, has to balance its books. Finance professionals are needed to help companies and other organisations to manage their money, in good times as well as bad, and there are usually any number of finance jobs to choose from.

Some employers outsource all or part of their financial requirements to banks, accountancy firms and specialist service providers, while others prefer to manage their finances in-house.

There are an interesting mix of finance jobs available in Oxford and across Oxfordshire at any given time, ranging from bookkeepers and payroll managers to management accountants and finance directors. They all fulfil different roles and together make up an organisation’s finance function.

At Allen Associates, we have over two decades of experience in identifying candidates with the skills and qualifications our clients are looking for. Our Oxford and Oxfordshire-based finance jobs may be full-time or part-time, permanent or temporary, and appeal to finance professionals at all levels, from recent graduates to highly experienced managers and directors. We also recruit for financial administration roles which appeal to a broad range of candidates.

Finance professionals require specialist skills and qualifications and as such, are highly regarded and well paid. Salaries vary significantly, depending on the industry sector and whether it is publicly or privately owned, but they tend to be very competitive and commensurate with the level of expertise required from the role.

Finance roles

If you’re good at maths, enjoy working with numbers and money, and are generally interested in the way that organisations operate financially, you will almost certainly be interested in a finance role.

As a student or recent graduate, you will have an excellent understanding of the employment pathways available to you and will no doubt be familiar with the range of entry-level finance roles available as you embark on your career.

If you’re approaching finance in a different way, for example via an administrative route or an unrelated career path, you may need to do a bit more research to get a handle on the range of opportunities. Some organisations offer internships and finance apprenticeships for example, while others offer financial admin jobs that can be developed over time or lead to more specialist roles.

At Allen Associates, the finance jobs we recruit for include:

  • Finance assistant or financial assistant

A finance assistant’s role will vary depending on the requirements of the organisation and the finance team. Typically, you will be responsible for creating and updating financial spreadsheets. Your duties may include reviewing bank statements and transactions, raising invoices and preparing financial statements. You may be expected to have a good working knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting principles.

Requirements of the role might include:

    • Work experience in a similar role
    • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and/or other accounting software packages and cloud-based programmes
    • Numerate with excellent attention to detail
    • Highly organised with good time management skills
    • Problem-solving abilities

  • Finance manager

Finance managers tend to have a proven track record in helping businesses to achieve their financial goals by ensuring they get the strategic advice and direction they need alongside the day-to-day delivery of sound financial practices and operations. In some organisations, the finance manager is responsible for the finance function working closely with banks, accountants and other third parties to deliver a complete service to the senior management or executive team, which they may also belong to. Finance managers will spend time analysing data and using it to assess, manage and forecast financial performance. In some businesses, the finance manager will report to a finance director.

  • Finance director or head of finance

The role of finance director is often one of the most important and prestigious roles within an organisation. The finance director will be part of a board of directors and will advise and report on the financial direction and wellbeing of the organisation. In smaller organisations, these top-level positions are usually outsourced or, in specific circumstances, a financial consultant or interim finance director may be brought in on a temporary basis.
