London pay is on the rise, but what does that mean for Candidates?

“No thank you, I don’t want a higher salary”, said no Candidate, ever.

There’s a reason you haven’t ever heard your peers utter that phrase. A pay rise is often the golden ticket when it comes to being happy at work – the ‘thank you’ from your manager that tells you you are doing well, the boost you need for your confidence, or the key to putting away some extra savings for that elusive house purchase.

There is no doubt, either – London salaries are on the rise, and have been for some time. In the Marketing sector alone, salaries rose by 4.6% in the year to February 2018. Employers are raising salaries sometimes twice in a year to attract the best talent, amid ferocious competition to boost their ranks with the best.

It’s a good time to be a Candidate. So, what does rising London pay mean for you?

More competition

Sorry to burst the bubble, but if you think that higher pay is just exclusive to you and your sector, you could be in for a shock.

Higher salaries are, of course, hugely appealing. This means everyone is going to want to pursue this next step, and those who haven’t asked before, will quickly develop the confidence to, now.

Competition, particularly in London, will always be fierce – with factors such as the chance to travel, to live in a world renowned capital and to progress with some of the world’s biggest companies. The chance to land your dream role with a higher salary will only add to that, but don’t let this put you off.

More responsibility

It might seem daunting trying to pack more into your already busy day, but the truth of the matter is that if you would like a role with a higher salary, it’s likely to involve more responsibility. With the talent pool shrinking and the competition for roles increasing by the day, Employers are happy to up the salaries to attract the best of the best, but they are going to expect that back from you, too. Chances are, though, if you yourself are looking for a bigger, better role, that you’re ready for that.

A work life balance

Work life balance, work life harmony, (as Amazon’s Jeff Bezos refers to it) – whatever you call it, you need it. The good news for you is that a higher salary can help you maintain a better balance between work, and a personal life.

Take London, for example. Most people face a commute of up to an hour battling with multiple modes of transport, but with a higher salary, your priority may be to reduce that travel stress and relocate to somewhere more convenient. Or, you could take advantage of the vast array of cultural activities the capital has to offer, and spend your evenings in different districts. Travel is another option – with five airports the possibilities for spontaneous trips seem endless. It’s important not to let stress overtake you in a role, so factoring in some of your budget to spend recreationally, could be an option for you.
